SGC Acquires Exclusive Rights to “Lost” Obama Interview for New Documentary

The Stuart Goldman Co. (SGC) has acquired exclusive worldwide rights to the oldest known videotape interview with Barack Obama from 1993, when he was a young lawyer and community organizer in Chicago. The interview will be incorporated in a new one-hour documentary, BARACK OBAMA: BECOMING BARACK, the story of Obama’s search for identity as a young man. The production is loosely guided by the book Dreams from My Father, an account of Obama's journey of self-exploration and coming to terms with his mixed heritage and confused self-image. BARACK OBAMA: BECOMING BARACK makes this journey come alive, exploring Obama's formative influences in Chicago in the mid-1980’s through mid-1990’s. and his African-American roots.
Born of mixed race, Obama desperately wanted to find his place—and his calling. As he grew older, his curiosity and inner passion intensified, driving him to search for a meaningful identity. At the time of the "lost" interview, he is “coming of age” in many respects: he relates satisfaction with his success in the 1992 Chicago voter registration campaign; working directly with people in the community; revelations about the importance of politics; and a desire to bring about change and help the underclasses. The high-quality 12-minute videotape, shot when Obama was just 32, was filmed at a time Barack Obama was virtually unknown outside the Chicago African-American community. He had just completed law school and was recently married. As for public office, he believes a "track record" is necessary first; he clearly isn't thinking seriously about it. BARACK OBAMA: BECOMING BARACK incorporates this never-seen interview to reveal the most detailed portrait yet of young Obama…and what would be the start of an historic journey! BECOMING BARACK reveals how Obama found his identity through community work in Chicago’s most underpriveledged neighborhoods, what were his key revelations, and how these experiences shaped the man who 15 years later became President. BARACK OBAMA: BECOMING BARACK brings audiences closer to the most powerful man in the world. Info: The Stuart Goldman Co., (212) 420-8800.
